Movie stuff!

Below, please find my very selective/subjective roundup of great movies that you can stream, for free, mostly with commercials but often without, this month. I hope to update it in the first few days of every month.

Also, a blanket disclaimer: cinema gets more racist, sexist, and generally problematic as you go back in time. You know it, I know it. Proceed clear-headed, take what you need, leave the rest, and don't say I didn't warn you. Further info below the list.

Personally watched and recommended by Yours Truly:

On Asian Crush (Don't worry - it's not what it sounds like! Their terrible branding, not mine).

Further info... and a plug for Kanopy and public libraries (they're not paying me)

As you may guess, I'm always looking to meet great movies, and to meet great people through them. For more info about how I compile the lists, or to talk movies generally, I invite you to email me at the address on my landing page, and I look forward to the conversation.

One specific detail you might be wondering about, leads us directly to a little plug that I feel obliged to insert. The way I’ve laid out the list, once it's compiled, should be pretty self-explanatory, but note that classics will often appear on more than one service in a given month. When there’s such a duplication, I indicate the best site. Kanopy is the most amazing free site overall, for my money (yes, it’s actually a tiny bit of my money, in the form of taxes). With the understanding that titles rotate in and out, a Kanopy account will probably give you the biggest free selection of truly special movies at any given time, period. However, add to this the fact that Kanopy privileges come right along with your card at participating libraries. (You didn’t think they’d leave out the L.A. Public Library system, did you?). You get a full 72 hours to “borrow”  (i.e., to watch) before you have to give someone else a crack at borrowing. I think the above terms truly put Kanopy in the top echelon.

Then there are the commercial sites, with their obligatory commercial breaks. Tubi subjects you to maybe ten minutes’ worth of commercials per two hours, Pluto subjects you to more like twenty, and the others are somewhere in between. Play around with it! The more insights we uncover together, the more literate we’ll all be in great cinema!

Flickeringly yours,

David
